PROGRAM D-5911

It’s December 28 and a new year is staring us in the face. As we face a new year, it is a good time to think of new beginnings, starting with a clean slate, getting off on the right foot, and all the other clichés that we hear at this time of year. Actually, we can determine to make new beginnings at any time of any year, if we will just set our will to do what we know we should do.
The first thing on my list is to reinforce my commitment to spending daily time in God’s Word and in prayer. Oh, yeah, I’ve been doing that for many years, but you know, it’s just so easy to either let it slide a little here and there, or simply get into a rut so that my time with God is not as productive and joyful as it should be.
So, here’s my thought for starting the New Year right: I’m going to try some new things, some new approaches to my daily time with God. For example, I want to use music more. The Psalmist says we are to come before him with joyful songs, so I’m going to literally apply that to my worship time. Now, since I live alone it’s no problem for me to sing out loud early in the morning, or to sing along with a special worship CD. If you have other people in your home, you may need to find a spot in the house where you won’t disturb others, or just hold the volume down a bit. But I’m certain we could all do this if we wanted to.
Secondly, I’m going to try a different approach to reading God’s Word. For many years I’ve been reading it through at least once in the year, and that is a very good thing to do. If you’ve never read the Bible completely through, why don’t you start your new year right by determining to find a schedule and follow it for the entire year. You’ll find one on-line at oneyearbible.com. Because I have done that several times, this year I’m going to read a certain portion for a month. For example, I could read Galatians every day for a month. That way I will really get it into my mind and heart.
I hope you’ll join me in starting the New Year off right by making a firm commitment to spend daily time in God’s Word and prayer. That will make a greater difference in your life than anything else you could do.
